Reverse VNC Instructions

  1. Get and install the software:  http://www.tightvnc.com/download.php    (the last version I've used is 2.7.10)

  2. Click the Installer for Windows (64 bit) – both the server and listener are now in one .msi file

  3. On Dad's computer, just need to choose the server while installing

  4. On mine, I could install just the viewer to see his but I think I installed both the server and the viewer.

  5. More information on the process in general can be found here.

  6. Set up port forwarding on my computer if not already done. Note: If already set up, enable them now.
    1. Open browswer to http://192.168.0.1/
    2. Click on Advanced tab, click on Virtual Server button
    3. VNCReverse1 192.168.0.100 Both 5800 5800
    4. VNCReverse2 192.168.0.100 Both 5500 5500
    5. VNCReverse3 192.168.0.100 Both 5900 5900

  7. Start the listener on my end.
    1. If there is an icon in the system tray already, click the icon in the system tray, chose New Connection, then click the Listening Mode button. maybe  (see .pdf for more information)
    2. If there isn’t yet an icon in the system tray, choose  Start->All Programs->TightVNC->TightVNC Viewer.   When the “New TightVNC Connection” window opens, click the Listening Mode button
  8. If prompted for a password, enter it.  In my case, remember there is no 'k' at the end

  9. Have Dad double click the icon I made on his desktop “TightVNC Server 2.7.10”
    1. If he somehow deleted the icon, he can click the Start -> All Programs->TightVNC->Launch TightVNCServer

  10. Have Dad right click the V system tray icon and I think he chooses the “attach listening viewer”
    1. 2014-07-26 no “attach listening viewer”, tried “Add new Client” and it worked

  11. Have Dad enters the IP address I give him from www.whatismyip.com

  12. When done, make sure both system tray icons are closed with right click and "Shutdown TightVNC Server" on his end and "Close listening daemon" on my end.
    1. Finally, disable port forwarding on my end.
