Stupid "not enough space to install" message :  happens because when displaying used space on phone memory, the space used by application caches is not displayed, but it is actually counting towards used space. Delete the cache (no data will be lost) to make room.

App Data Use

to see the amount of space taken up by each app,

(1) this article said to use Google Play.  Click on the more menu, then select "My apps & games", then click on "Installed".  Click on the quasi-more menu (which probably defaulted to Alpabetical) and choose "Size".

(2) settings->storage->Internal Storage-> Apps  [has sort by size, shows data and cache values]

(3) settings->applications->Application Manager [fairly quick, shows value for each app, no sort by size]

don't show pics in folder and subfolders

Add a file ".nomedia" to have the pics, movies and music not be added to gallery, etc.  Note that Windows won't allow a file with only a filename extension [and no filename base], so create/rename the file directly on the android device

Internal storage / hidden files and folders

it appears there is a bug in Astro that prevents hidden files and folders from being displayed

Exporting Contacts and importing them into Outlook

Android contacts only exports as .vcf and when imported into Outlook, only the first contact is imported.  The workaround is to use google contacts as a free and easy way to convert .vcf to .csv

  1. Open Contacts and click the overflow icon = three vertical dots
  2. Choose Settings, then Contacts, then Import/Export contacts
  3. Choose one of the Export choices and note the location where the file will be saved
  4. Move the file to a Windows machine that is logged into google
  5. Go to https://contacts.google.com/
  6. Choose the Import submenu from the More menu on the left side, then pick "CSV or vCard file" in the dialog
  7. If a dialog is displayed that it isn't yet supported, click the "GO TO OLD VERSION" link, then click "Import Contacts..." in the left column.
  8. Follow the prompts to select the file and import the vCard (.vcf) file.
  9. While still in the old version of Google Contacts, click the More menu at the top and choose Export, choose "Outlook CSV ..." then follow the prompts
  10. Open the .csv file in Excel and save it as .csv again to change line feeds from 1 character to CR + LFs.  This avoids an import error in
  11. step 12.
  12. Create a new Contacts folder in Outloook
  13. Import the CSV file into Outlook with File-> "Open & Export" -> Import/Export -> Import from another program or file.  A prompt will allow the selection of the newly created Contacts folder.
